Blending Process #

Blending is a process which mixes the API and excipients to ensure there is a homogeneous mixture of the all ingredients for each manufacturing process. Blending is a process that can be carried out numerous times within a manufacturing process when new excipients need to be added to the blend.

Capsule Filling Process #

Capsule filling or Encapsulation provides pharmaceutical developers with a versatile and commercially validated formulation technique. It can be useful for both drug product intermediates and final products when faced with the oral delivery of foul-tasting APIs, fragile APIs, or combining two incompatible APIs into a combination product. Encapsulation is also becoming ever more popular for long-acting dosage forms for the extended API release.

Counting Process #

Packaging of solid-dosage drugs generally occurs by counting rather than by weight or volume. Slat fillers remain commonplace, especially for large batches. Demand is continuing to grow, however, for electronic counters, which are now approaching slat-filler speeds and tend to be more flexible.

Dispensing Process #

The first unit operation is the introduction of the various ingredients and raw materials into the manufacturing process. This starts with accurately weighing the APIs, excipients, fillers, and miscellaneous materials, and then dispensing them into the process vessel. Handling powders typically produces dust, so ingredient dispensing must occur in a controlled and contained environment. This may include local exhaust ventilation (LEV) enclosures, downflow booths, isolators, or other containment and process control devices.

Dry Granulation Process #

Dry granulation is the process of joining powder particles together to create a very dense larger particle or granule. In the dry granulation process, a high-motive force joins the granules and compacts the powders without the use of an additional binder.

Encapsulation Process #

The encapsulation unit operation creates the final dosage form that patients receive. This step compresses or encapsulates the formulation into the end product: a capsule.

Fluid Bed Process #

The fluid bed granulation process (also known as agglomeration) involves suspending particles in an air stream and spraying a liquid from the top of the system down onto the fluidized bed (top-down spray). Particles in the path of the spray get slightly wet and become sticky.

Sifting Process #

Sifting and/or milling prior to the granulation process is a common final check to ensure the quality and integrity of the material. To go through the entire process only to see a batch wasted due to a small piece of plastic in one of the blends is an easily avoidable occurrence.

Tablet Coating Process #

One of the final steps in the OSD manufacturing process is tablet coating. After a core tablet has been compressed, a film or functional coat is applied to the tablet. This improves the taste and makes the tablet easier to swallow. A functional coating is also common. This is an additional active ingredient applied to the outside of the tablet.

Also known as Tablet Compression, this step involves the compression of granules into a flat or convex, round, oblong, or unique shaped, scored or unscored tablets; engraved with an identifying symbol and/ or code number using tablet press.

Weighing Process #

Weighing is an important part of dosage form manufacturing. This process checks for gross weights of each container before and after filling by means of technologically advanced load cells. This allows online rejection of invalid containers when the filled weight exceeds preset allowable weight range.

Wet Granulation Process #

Wet granulation is the process of joining powder particles together to create a larger particle, known as a granule. The granules can be composed of particles that are either the same or dissimilar materials depending upon the formulation ingredients. In the wet granulation process, granules are joined together using a binder solution, often aqueous, that is sprayed into the process.
